Diaphragm Relaxation is the Core of the Buteyko Breathing Method

Listen to Dr. Jesse Steinberg explaining in this video why diaphragm relaxation is the most essential part of the Buteyko Breathing Method. In addition, you will learn from Sasha Yakovleva about an event she created to help people experience a deep level of relaxation and, especially, diaphragm relaxation.

Dr. Buteyko stated that relaxation of the diaphragm is the core element of his method and essential for health improvement. Unfortunately, most people cannot feel their diaphragm and, therefore, are not able to relax it. If they could relax the diaphragm and keep it this way, there would be no need to do Buteyko Breathing Exercises because just the diaphragm relaxation significantly increases the CO2 concentration in the lungs and, consequently, reduces or stops various symptoms and health issues.

Relaxation of the diaphragm is essential for anyone who wishes to improve their healthThe above illustration from Breathe To Heal book demonstrates that the Buteyko journey to better health always starts by learning how to relax the diaphragm.

How do we start working on improving our health? From the perspective of K.P. Buteyko, MD-PhD, the first step is the diaphragm relaxation, but how do we do it?

In the Breathe To Heal book, Dr. Novozhilov recommends various exercises to relax the diaphragm – physical and mental. One of the easiest ways to relax the diaphragm is by using hot water. It can be achieved by taking a warm shower (a technique that helped many asthmatics to stop their asthma attacks) or hot bath or by immersing the entire body in a hot spring pool. Ludmila Buteyko, for example, visited a hot spring area in Bulgaria every year and found doing Buteyko Breathing exercises in natural hot water highly beneficial to her health. Following her guidance, Sasha Yakovleva organized a Joyful Journey to Health retreat that is going to take place in Colorado in a mineral hot springs spa. The participants of this retreat will start every day by sitting in hot pools and doing breathing exercises, relaxing their diaphragms, and boosting their CO2 levels. They will also wear Buteyko belts that support the process of diaphragm relaxation.

Relaxation of the diaphragm is a step we cannot skip if you want to become healthy. Following Dr. Buteyko’s teachings allow to achieve this goal quickly and successfully.
