Surfing, Health, and Buteyko *

This surfer from Maui, Hawaii, decided to take the Buteyko Breathing Normalization Training course with Sasha Yakovleva because he was having some health problems and could not understand their causes. One of the problems was that he would often feel breathless, especially when surfing. This generated some fear based on the feeling that anything could happen at any time, and he had no control over his breathing or heart rate.

The Buteyko program helped him to notice his heavy mouth breathing, especially during surfing, and start applying various Buteyko techniques to correct the situation and increase his vital energy (CO2). Watch this video where Phil shares his thought about Buteyko Breathing and surfing and the results of his two-month-long individual program with Sasha.

Here is a letter from Phil written to Sasha on May 9, 2022:

“I have been quite busy so I’m just now getting around to replying to your email. Thank you for sending the encouraging note. I always enjoy hearing from you.

I wanted to share with you my thoughts and experiences in the last few months in regards to our work together. First of all, I’m very happy that I found you and the Buteyko breathing method. It turned out to be exactly what I was looking for and more. A few things:

Mindful breathing. Practicing silent, gentle, invisible breathing throughout the day has proven to be very helpful in maintaining good breathing and overall health in general. I find that I can regulate my breathing with the tools I now have. Also, by slowing down at times to let things catch up is helpful on different levels.

Have been surfing quite a lot since we last spoke. Although I am not nose breathing all the time I am more and more. Through nose breathing and slowing down at times when needed, I don’t get “gassed” anymore. We accomplished what we set out to do! And for that I am grateful.

Other lessons I learned from you that I am applying: Morning fast. Well not completely fasting but I only have 2 meals a day at about 11 am and 6 pm and just some fruits and nuts as needed to get by. It has helped me maintain a healthy weight and I feel great.

Sleep. I now get up at around 3 am. I think, breathe, then usually practice music or exercise. I love it. Such productive hours.

Chanting and meditation. I don’t do it as much as I should but it is another helpful tool and helps my overall attitude.

So Sasha thank you. I’m very grateful for what you taught me. Let me know if you ever get out this way.

Aloha,

Phil”
