In 2020, James Nestor traveled to Colorado to meet Sasha Yakovleva while deep into researching his new book on the power of breathing. He began by visiting Sasha at her Boulder office, then joined her clients for tea at Whole Foods. These Buteyko students had successfully overcome asthma symptoms using the Buteyko Breathing method. As he walked into Whole Foods, James held Sasha’s book Breathe to Heal in his hands.
Gathered around a table, James opened the book. “I have a lot of questions,” he admitted. As he flipped through the pages seeking answers, Sasha’s students exchanged surprised glances: nearly every page was underlined and annotated with pencil notes.
One of Sasha’s students remarked, “Well, it seems you’ve studied this book really well. I’m surprised you still have questions.”
James sighed deeply, “Breathing seems to be quite complicated.” This prompted laughter from the group. Sasha smiled and nodded, “Yes, indeed.”
James’ book Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art, published during the COVID years, resonated worldwide—awakening millions to the transformative power of breath and highlighting that optimal health starts with optimal breathing. Among those inspired was Sachin, who battled asthma, low energy, and a general feeling of malaise. After contacting the Buteyko Breathing Center, Sachin had a private session with Sasha, who helped him create a personalized program.
In 2022, Sachin joined the Buteyko BreathMastery & International Community program, which dramatically accelerated his healing journey. His wife also joined, allowing the couple to practice the method together and support one another.
