Q:    What is the essence of the Buteyko Method?
A: The essence of the Buteyko Method is Dr. Buteyko’s discovery that hyperventilation or excessive breathing is the cause of disease and that it is possible to eliminate a disease by normalizing breathing and increasing CO2 concentration in the lungs, indicated by a higher Positive Maximum Pause (PMP).

Q: Is there a direct correlation between the effect of allergens and the level of Positive Maximum Pause (PMP)?A: Yes, there is a direct correlation between the effect of allergens and the level of Positive Maximum Pause. The closer the morning Positive Maximum Pause is to 40 seconds, the less effect the allergen has on us.

Q.    What Positive Maximum Pause should a person have to be less influenced by climate?
A: According to Dr. Novozhilov, weather greatly affects people with a Positive Maximum Pause of below 20 seconds. The closer our Positive Maximum Pause is to 40 seconds or higher, the less we are influenced by the climate.

Q:   What must we do to maintain a high enough Positive Maximum Pause to avoid being influenced by negative circumstances or stress?
A: To ensure a high Positive Maximum Pause, we must engage in physical activities and do breathing exercises daily. We should be “in the method” by always maintaining a comfortable feeling of air hunger. We also must get rid of all chronic infections including those found in tonsils and teeth.

Q: What level of Positive Maximum Pause is necessary for a person to be completely healthy?
A: For a person to be completely healthy, it is necessary to have a Positive Maximum Pause of 60 seconds or higher and be stable at that level for at least 6 months.

Q:   Which breathing measurement during the day is the most important one? Why?
A: The morning Control Pause or Positive Maximum Pause is the most important measurement of the day because it reflects the most accurate state of our health. We can artificially increase our CP/PMP during the day by doing, for example, the breath holds or other breathing exercises; however, this is not a true reflection of our state of health. The morning CP/PMP is the least altered. Also, it is usually the lowest measurement.

A:    What is “Breathing Regulation by the Deficit of Oxygen”?
Q: According to Dr. Buteyko, when a PMP is below 40 seconds, there is a deficit of carbon dioxide in the lungs, and therefore a deficit of oxygen in the blood and on the cellular level. At this time, breathing is regulated by the deficit of oxygen. The deficit of oxygen triggers the body to increase ventilation in an attempt to get more oxygen, however, this does not work, and the deficit becomes greater and greater as the ventilation increases.

Q:    What happens to the levels of carbon dioxide and oxygen in the body when PMP Pause is consistently 40 seconds or higher?
A: When the Positive Maximum is consistently 40 seconds or higher, the level of carbon dioxide in the lungs and blood returns to normal, which causes oxygen content in the cells to become normal according to medical standards. The body is in a state of balance.

Q:    What is “Breathing Regulation by Carbon Dioxide?”
A: When the Positive Maximum Pause reaches 40 seconds and higher, the oxygen level in the cells becomes normal according to medical standards. At this time, the regulation of breathing becomes regulated by the level of carbon dioxide in the blood. When there is a deficit of carbon dioxide in the blood, the ventilation decreases to bring it back to normal. If carbon dioxide is too high, breathing increases.
