Healing Crisis

Healing CrisisSome people say: “Buteyko worked for me but only for a while. My disease came back and became as bad as it ever was, if not worse!” It is easy to mistake a healing crisis for symptoms of disease - which often makes people terminate their breathing practice.

Within this method, healing often comes with a ‘healing crisis’ or, as it is also called, a ‘cleansing reaction’. This is not a unique feature - most natural healing techniques have a similar element. The difference is that breathing is powerful and, therefore, the Buteyko healing crisis could be scary. It is important to recognize the ‘symptoms’ of this event in order to differentiate them from a disease or even an ordinary flu.

Why Do People Hyperventilate?

People often ask our Buteyko Breathing Normalization Specialist, “Isn’t breathing supposed to be natural? How come you say that most people hyperventilate?”

If we followed a natural life style, we would not hyperventilate and our breathing would remain normal. But what is a natural life style? Buteyko was an outstanding physiologist who looked at all areas of human life and determined what is natural for us and what is not. He believed that if people follow their natural life style or, as I prefer to call it ‘our original programming,’ they would be healthy and there would be no need for breathing exercises. However, since our initial design was mostly abandoned for the sake of comfort, we have to face the consequences.

My body: friend or enemy?

My body: friend or enemy?

It seems to me that doctors often treat the human body as a kind of unintelligent machine, which often breaks creating bothersome symptoms. Following doctors’ supervision, patients go to a pharmacy, buy the best available weapons and fight against their symptoms. Many of these drugs have serious side-effects, which produce more symptoms leading to more medication. Often people try hard, as my husband did, but this war against your own body never ends. Over time, the drugs and their side-effects become stronger, possibly lethal.

Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide

Dr. Buteyko compared breathing to atomic energy: from his perspective, the awesome power of breathing was capable of destroying and rebuilding health extraordinary fast. Similar to radiation, air - when consumed normally - is beneficial; however, when the norm is exceeded, it becomes dangerous. What is the norm?  Russian doctors measure it as five liters of air per minute.

Chris Christie: Reading His Breathing

Chris Christie: Reading His Breathing

Breathing gives out a plethora of information. Breathing Normalization specialists don’t ask questions; they answer them by observing a person’s breathing. Let’s use the Governor of New Jersey as an example. What does his breathing say about him?

Watch this video and observe Chris Christie’s breathing. What do you see? He is a mouth breather; most of the time his mouth is wide open; his breathing is noisy. That indicates that he over-breathes to a significant degree, causing great damage to his body.

President Putin, Prince Charles and Breathing Normalization

President Putin, Prince Charles and Breathing Normalization

A couple of weeks ago, I was in Moscow watching President Putin
give speeches, speak to journalists, etc. I just arrived in Russia, a place I had not visited in two years. I decided to surf the TV to tune in with the current situation. The President was on the news and, being a Breathing Normalization specialist, I couldn’t help but observe his breathing. To my surprise, it was almost perfect! Putin's breathing indicated reliable health, good stamina, consistent self-control and strong abilities to resist stress. “Is Putin practicing Dr. Buteyko's method?” I wondered.

Meditate Non-Stop Without Meditating

Breathe Like You Are Meditating
Just a short time ago the connection between meditation and health seemed a mystery but now many people are aware that meditation can restore health and reduce stress. Nevertheless, only few understand the main mechanism behind this phenomenon.

During meditation breathing becomes shallower and even stops for short periods of time. This upsurges the level of carbon dioxide in the lungs increasing oxygen delivery by haemoglobin to all organs, making them function more efficiently. This could only be good!

Asthma: Winter Hiking at 9,000 Feet and More

If there is a disease, there is a cure - I believe this phrase belongs to Buddha Shakyamuni. If you were told that your disease (asthma, for instance) is incurable, don't be discouraged. This means only one thing: doctors don't know how to make peace with this disease. Search for people who know how to guide you to optimal health.

When Your Nose is Blocked

Do you have a stuffy or blocked nose?

If your nose is blocked, don't try to open it up by vigorously blowing it. Blowing one's nose consists of a deep mouth inhalation and forceful exhalation and leads to a loss of CO2 in lungs, which normally results in the deterioration of health. Instead of blowing, try to unblock your nose with the following technique:

Are You Regular?

How was your poop this morning? Easy? Quick? Laborious? Or do you still hope for a movement?

Roughly about 63 million people in North America suffer from constipation, according to a scientific review by Mayo's College of Medicine. Doctors suspect a link between constipation and the development of hemorrhoids, incontinence, colon cancer and other unpleasant and unsafe conditions.

Breathing and Relationships

When my husband and I came across Dr. Buteyko's approach, his Positive Maximum Pause was 3 seconds and mine was 10. Very low! Even though we loved each other dearly, many of our conversations would often end up in a heated argument. When his and my breathing patterns became shallower, our relationship improved. I wrote a thank you letter to our teacher, Dr. Novozhilov, the Medical Director of Clinica Buteyko Moscow. "I am grateful for my 'new' husband," - I said- "I like the improved model better".

Flu is Welcome, Even Beneficial

I grew up in the Soviet Union when it was still rare to meet a severely ill person. Honestly, I don't remember anyone with asthma or diabetes in my proximity. I recall though people catching the flu rather often and spending a couple of weeks at home, mostly resting in bed and drinking hot fluids. This was common for children and adults.

When I moved to the United States, I discovered that most people couldn't afford this luxury. Demands of work or school would force them to block or shut down their flu symptoms. Various drugs, antibiotics and flu shots are used for avoiding high fever, cough and body aches... but is it possible - I thought - that this approach contributes to the development of more serious health problems?

Cold and Flu

Last winter I spent a month in a retreat center, where every day residents would get together for meals. The dining room was the arena for most discussions. To my surprise many of them were about colds and flu driven by an assumption that it is normal to get ill during winter. Coughing and sniffling, people advised each other on natural remedies and generously shared their drugs. They were also trying to figure out how to protect themselves from a dangerous flu. During these conversations, I found myself remaining quiet... most people would rather be ill than change their belief system.
