Breathing Exercises?

People often ask our Breathing Normalization specialists, "Isn't breathing supposed to be natural? How come you say that most people hyperventilate?"

If we followed a natural lifestyle, we would not hyperventilate and our breathing would remain normal. But what is a natural lifestyle? Dr. Buteyko was an outstanding physiologist who looked at all areas of human life and determined what is natural for us and what is not. He believed that if people follow their natural lifestyle or, as I prefer to call it 'our original programming,' they would be healthy and there would be no need for breathing exercises. However, since our initial design was mostly abandoned for the sake of comfort, we have to face the consequences.

Effortless State of Health

Imagine that all pharmacies and hospitals close; all medications vanish; and even alternative treatments became unavailable. What will happen? I imagine that in the United States many people would die. Many would undergo tremendous pain and suffering. Many would not be able to work or take care of their families.

Over-Breathing is Epidemic

Breathing patterns are the product of our lifestyle. When the lifestyle becomes unnatural, breathing patterns change. As a result, most modern people over-breathe. Hyperventilation becomes a major risk factor for asthma and any breathing difficulty, anxiety, enlarged adenoids, polyps, allergies, hypertension, heart diseases, chronic fatigue and many other health issues.

Success

Recently I've been very successful. I gave up my car (at least for the summer), stopped eating meat, fish, poultry and eggs. I've also been privileged to observe the success of people around me. For example, my husband, Thomas, stopped using sun blocks, which was not easy considering that he spent many years in Hawaii. He also replaced his Iphone with a simple internet-free phone. I also noticed that AnnChris, our Program Coordinator and a former asthmatic, is off of her medication - she does not need it anymore! Monique, our Breathing Normalization Specialist from Holland, told me that recently she stopped wearing socks and even gave up her favorite vest. She was able to do so because her body temperature became more self-regulatory. Also, several of our students stopped consuming dairy products.

It's Hot

What happens when the weather becomes too hot? Most people switch to hyperventilation!

During hot summer days the tendency to breathe through the mouth, or too frequently and too deep is always higher. By decreasing the level of carbon dioxide in the lungs, this type of breathing reduces the amount of oxygen being delivered to the brain, heart, kidneys and all other bodily organs (see the Bohr Effect). This makes many symptoms more active and could even cause death.

Why I Don't Use Sun Block

Theoretically, sun exposure is conducive to our health. Sun rays accelerate metabolism making our bodies produce more carbon dioxide. The increased level of CO2 in lungs lessens our breathing and creates a strong positive impact on all functions of the body.

Pollen. Now?

Right now, pollen is as high as it can be triggering asthma, allergies and all sorts of breathing difficulties. What can we do about it? Buteyko's breathing exercises help us to pass through this difficult season without the intake of medication. The Awareness Belt is also instrumental in reducing couching, sniffling, sneezing, tearing, etc. Of course, the perfection of the Breathing Normalization method makes people completely free of any breathing trouble, including asthma and allergies. Maybe now it is the time to invest in your health? Maybe now is the time to help your children become disease-free?

Fitness: Good or Bad For Your Health?

I had not been to the gym for years and when I recently visited one, I was shocked. I saw pale and exhausted people torturing themselves through exercise. Almost all were breathing heavily through their mouths! They were unaware that their fitness was harming their health.

Look In the Mirror (Breathing Exercise)

Put a chair in front of a big mirror, uncover the upper part of your body and sit down. If you don't have a big mirror, just imagine that you are in front of one.

Familiarize yourself with your breathing by observing your body movements. Ask yourself the following questions:

Sleeping At Night: CO2 Rich or Poor?

When we are asleep, we don't have any control over our breathing. We are also physically inactive and our metabolism is slow, producing less carbon dioxide than during active periods of the day. Hyperventilation is the strongest during the night and especially early in the morning, usually generating strong symptoms. Stopping hyperventilation during the night is an important step towards better health.

Asthma: What Do You Think?

Today in the US asthma is considered an epidemic. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, Asthma is the most common chronic disease of childhood. In the United States, it is estimated that nearly 5 million youngsters under age 18 have this disease. In 1993 alone, asthma was the reason for almost 200,000 hospital stays and about 340 deaths among people under age 25.

Stop Being Allergic

Blooming tress, growing grass, and fragrant flowers often cause sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes and terrible headaches. Unfortunately, allergies are so common that they seem normal.

Allergies are not normal! From Dr. Buteyko’s perspective, it is a serious health issue indicating the dysfunction of the immune system. If they are not stopped by Breathing Normalization, he believed allergies could lead to cancer..
