When Your Nose is Blocked

Do you have a stuffy or blocked nose?

If your nose is blocked, don't try to open it up by vigorously blowing it. Blowing one's nose consists of a deep mouth inhalation and forceful exhalation and leads to a loss of CO2 in lungs, which normally results in the deterioration of health. Instead of blowing, try to unblock your nose with the following technique:

Are You Regular?

How was your poop this morning? Easy? Quick? Laborious? Or do you still hope for a movement?

Roughly about 63 million people in North America suffer from constipation, according to a scientific review by Mayo's College of Medicine. Doctors suspect a link between constipation and the development of hemorrhoids, incontinence, colon cancer and other unpleasant and unsafe conditions.

Breathing and Relationships

When my husband and I came across Dr. Buteyko's approach, his Positive Maximum Pause was 3 seconds and mine was 10. Very low! Even though we loved each other dearly, many of our conversations would often end up in a heated argument. When his and my breathing patterns became shallower, our relationship improved. I wrote a thank you letter to our teacher, Dr. Novozhilov, the Medical Director of Clinica Buteyko Moscow. "I am grateful for my 'new' husband," - I said- "I like the improved model better".

Flu is Welcome, Even Beneficial

I grew up in the Soviet Union when it was still rare to meet a severely ill person. Honestly, I don't remember anyone with asthma or diabetes in my proximity. I recall though people catching the flu rather often and spending a couple of weeks at home, mostly resting in bed and drinking hot fluids. This was common for children and adults.

When I moved to the United States, I discovered that most people couldn't afford this luxury. Demands of work or school would force them to block or shut down their flu symptoms. Various drugs, antibiotics and flu shots are used for avoiding high fever, cough and body aches... but is it possible - I thought - that this approach contributes to the development of more serious health problems?

Cold and Flu

Last winter I spent a month in a retreat center, where every day residents would get together for meals. The dining room was the arena for most discussions. To my surprise many of them were about colds and flu driven by an assumption that it is normal to get ill during winter. Coughing and sniffling, people advised each other on natural remedies and generously shared their drugs. They were also trying to figure out how to protect themselves from a dangerous flu. During these conversations, I found myself remaining quiet... most people would rather be ill than change their belief system.

Highlights of 2012

During this year, Breathing Center's most popular program was Adenoids Without Surgery. We are proud that we were able to help many kids become healthy and free of any respiratory problems.

The most visited testimonial on our website was by Ram Dass, a famous spiritual teacher and former psychology professor at Harvard. If you have not seen it yet, you might enjoy watching his video and reading about his application of the Breathing Normalization method. We also suggest checking out the rest of the video testimonials. This breathing method creates miracles!

Breath of Christmas

Are holidays good or bad for our health? Dr. Buteyko's approach helps us to find answers to this question.

Holidays are often associated with worries, even though many people are hesitant to admit it. Seeing a family could be stressful since this activity is often accompanied by judgments. Choosing the right present could be a laborious and challenging task. Overspending often creates anxiety and attempts to make everyone happy might feel as a failure. If you add excessive amounts of food (often too rich), alcohol/caffeine drinks and lack of physical activities, this holiday cocktail is not going to look healthy.

Great and Meaningful

Think about gifts... How many have you received or given?

Did you put some on a shelf and forget about them? Have you ever re-gifted? I am sure some presents helped you experience true kindness, perhaps even love but did any of them create a significant difference in your life?

Salt, Kidneys, Health

Salt is essential for our health. All mammals consume it and humans should not be an exception. Dr. Buteyko recommended eating it without any limitations. Salt helps to restore vital minerals, which most people lose due to over-breathing.

When I came across Dr. Buteyko's approach, I suffered from chronic pain in my kidneys. I was concerned about it since kidney problems run in my family. When Dr. Novozhilov advised eating salt as much as I desired, I became alarmed. I always liked salty food but would restrict my salt consumption following traditional medical recommendations. Nevertheless, I decided to take a risk...

Breathe Less to Live Longer

Yogis believe that the lifespan of a man is measured not in years but in a number of breaths. If a person's inhalation is rapid, he or she will die young. If a person is economical with their breath, they will live a hundred years or more.

As Breathing Normalization specialists, we confirm that breathing reduction slows down and sometimes even reverses aging. Looking at my own pictures from five years ago, before I began practicing the Breathing Normalization method, I can see that I look younger now.

Absence of Disease or the Presence of Balance

The work of medical doctors is driven by the viewpoint that the human body is as a collection of individual organs integrated into systems - like in mechanics. Often, an organ's function is improved at the expense of other organs; the medical work is often evaluated by the success rate of problems being eliminated instead of overall health improvement. As our medical consultant Dr. Ira Packman put it, health is the presence of balance, not the absence of disease.

Breathing Exercises?

People often ask our Breathing Normalization specialists, "Isn't breathing supposed to be natural? How come you say that most people hyperventilate?"

If we followed a natural lifestyle, we would not hyperventilate and our breathing would remain normal. But what is a natural lifestyle? Dr. Buteyko was an outstanding physiologist who looked at all areas of human life and determined what is natural for us and what is not. He believed that if people follow their natural lifestyle or, as I prefer to call it 'our original programming,' they would be healthy and there would be no need for breathing exercises. However, since our initial design was mostly abandoned for the sake of comfort, we have to face the consequences.

Effortless State of Health

Imagine that all pharmacies and hospitals close; all medications vanish; and even alternative treatments became unavailable. What will happen? I imagine that in the United States many people would die. Many would undergo tremendous pain and suffering. Many would not be able to work or take care of their families.

Over-Breathing is Epidemic

Breathing patterns are the product of our lifestyle. When the lifestyle becomes unnatural, breathing patterns change. As a result, most modern people over-breathe. Hyperventilation becomes a major risk factor for asthma and any breathing difficulty, anxiety, enlarged adenoids, polyps, allergies, hypertension, heart diseases, chronic fatigue and many other health issues.
