| Marilyn Wood's Personal Recovery Story |
My issues with asthma started late in life, beginning in early 2007 with a six-month course of antibiotics to treat Lyme disease. Little did I realize at the time that this could adversely affect my lungs as well as other aspects of my health. A few months later, during a routine checkup with my internist, the doctor noticed some "crackling" in my lungs when I breathed, and prescribed Symbicort. Knowing that I was hypersensitive to many medications, I was reluctant to use it, especially since my symptoms were quite mild. So I set it aside.
Then, about two years later, I consulted a pulmonologist because of mysterious episodes of extreme lightheadedness after laughing, singing, or feeling any strong emotion. Although the pulmonologist did not discover the source of the problem (he called it "hyperventilation" and suggested I breathe into a brown paper bag) he did state that I had mild asthma. He prescribed a rescue inhaler and a steroid medication, which he told me to use regularly, warning that my asthma would likely continue to worsen.
At the same time, I had intensifying bouts of seasonal allergies. So, on the recommendation of my doctor, I started taking an over-the-counter allergy medication along with the asthma medications prescribed by the pulmonologist. In a short while, I developed serious cardiac arrhythmias, and so stopped all medications, putting myself under the care of a cardiologist.
Once the heart problems were resolved, I was able to continue without asthma medications for another year or two, but then began noticing that I was having some trouble breathing after my voice lessons. Unwilling to take the standard medications, I began looking for alternative asthma treatments on the Internet, and discovered the Buteyko Method. After reading about it, I began some measures on my own: breathing through the nose only; taping my mouth at night to prevent nocturnal mouth breathing; and deliberately reducing my breathing after voice lessons. This led to some improvement.
However, in addition to mild asthma, worsening allergies, and heart arrhythmias—after a lifetime of reasonably good, stable health—I had been facing other health challenges, first with debilitating illnesses such as the aforementioned Lyme disease, Valley Fever (coccidioidomycosis), and shingles, and then with my kidneys. As I read more about the Buteyko Method, I learned that the approach is designed not just to treat asthma, but also generally to strengthen the immune system and greatly improve overall health.
It was at this point that I decided to make the commitment to learning the Buteyko Method and so signed up for the Buteyko Method and Lifestyle Course. Since that time I have been doing my exercises faithfully three times a day and have made changes to my lifestyle. The path has not been without challenges; there were many ups and downs and moments when I felt I was getting worse, not better, as the immune system came back on track and provoked "healing crises." I also uncovered some chronic systemic infections that needed to be addressed. But I have kept going, and intend to continue.
At this time, I have no asthma symptoms; my allergies have lessened considerably, and—for someone who has always been extremely susceptible to flu and upper respiratory infections—I went through the entire "flu season" intact. My family and friends tell me that I look much healthier, with a glow to my face and a spring in my step. Indeed, I feel much stronger and more alive. So there's been great progress—and there's still much more ahead! And, inspired by my healing process, I decided to take the practitioner training in order to help others gain the benefits I have experienced.

| Biography |
I have a varied background. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, I spent my early years moving with my family—at least 19 times by the time I was six years old! My final move (before settling in Westbury, New York, on Long Island) was to Budapest, Hungary, where my father was a military attaché at the American legation. I have many interesting memories of that time, which was a transitional period in Hungarian history.
After earning a B.A. in French language and literature from Wellesley College, spending my junior year in France, and earning an M.A. in Romance languages and working toward my Ph.D. at Harvard University, I married and moved to the Washington, D.C. area, where I taught French at a local private school. I retired from teaching upon the birth of my daughter, returning to the workplace a few years later, inspired by the books of Alvin Toffler, to design a course on the future and to do consulting in the area of futures research.
This eventually led me to Capitol Hill, where I worked for the U.S. Congress in a group called the Congressional Clearinghouse on the Future, inviting well-known speakers and designing educational programs for members of Congress to help assess the broader societal impacts of legislation.
Two years later, seeking to spend more time at home, I became self-employed, consulting in the area of futures research and branching out into technical writing, training, and marketing. I also translated three books from French into English for my European spiritual teacher. Then, as a culmination of several years of volunteer work (which occurred during my self-employment period) in a spiritually based healing institute, I accepted a full-time position in that organization, counseling, designing and presenting workshops, leading a support group, editing, writing, and directing a small publishing company. A few years later I returned to self-employment as a writer, editor and trainer, eventually becoming a proposal manager in a large company.
During this period I also gave attention to my creative side, taking voice lessons, singing in Puccini opera choruses and beginning to paint. In addition, I continued to pursue my strong, longstanding commitment to spirituality and to alternative healing methods.
Now, having completed the requirements to become a Certified Buteyko Method Specialist, I am eager to give back to others, putting to use my Buteyko training, my skills as an educator and counselor, and my experience in applying the Buteyko Method in my own life. I look forward to guiding and supporting people who have made the commitment to improving their own health through the Buteyko Method. I know I will also learn much from those who join with me in the process!
