All Questions and Answers:

Q: Who is K. P. Buteyko?

A: Konstantin Pavlovich Buteyko (1923-2003) was a Ukrainian-born medical doctor and scientist who made multiple paradigm-shifting discoveries about human health and disease.  Based on his discoveries and subsequent research, he developed a treatment system – later named the Buteyko Method – which eliminates the root cause of 150 of the most common modern diseases.  You can read more about K. P. Buteyko here.

Q: What did K. P. Buteyko discover?

A: K. P. Buteyko’s most famous discovery was that chronic pulmonary hyperventilation is the root cause of 150 of the most common modern diseases.  This discovery is discussed in-depth in our primary educational course – Buteyko Method and Lifestyle.  Buteyko also made several other important discoveries about human health, which are addressed in detail in our advanced educational course - Buteyko Discoveries.

Q: What is the Buteyko Method?

A: Throughout his five decades of medical practice and research, K. P. Buteyko developed and refined a treatment to address chronic pulmonary hyperventilation, which he saw as the root cause of 150 of the most common modern diseases.  Originally named the ‘Voluntary Elimination of Deep Breathing Method,’ his system later became known as the Buteyko Method.  Here, K. P. Buteyko presents his method in his own words.

Q: What diseases can be treated with the Buteyko Method?

A: Throughout his medical career, K. P. Buteyko treated 150 of the most common modern diseases with his method.  These include diseases of the cardiovascular, digestive, endocrine, immune, integumentary, muscular, nervous, reproductive, respiratory, skeletal and urinary systems.  Here, you can find the full List of Curable Diseases as compiled by K. P. Buteyko – presented in its original form.

Q: What are the Buteyko Breathing Exercises?

A: The Buteyko Breathing Exercises are the core of the Buteyko Method.  K. P. Buteyko developed and refined these all-important ‘breathing reduction’ exercises over many years.  Objectively speaking, these exercises create important bio-chemical shifts in multiple body systems (primarily the respiratory, metabolic, immune, cardio-pulmonary and nervous systems) that promote healing and regeneration.  Subjectively, they create a feeling of ‘calm and restfulness.’  When practiced diligently, the Buteyko Breathing Exercises normalize breathing and create optimal health.

Please be advised: We strongly recommended practicing the Buteyko Breathing Exercises only under the supervision of a certified Buteyko Practitioner.  This is due to the fact that working on your own, or with an un-skilled practitioner, can be risky to your breathing and health.

Q: How quickly will my health start to improve with the Buteyko Method?

A: Health improvement with the Buteyko Method is different for every person.  However, in general, many people experience a significant shift in their symptoms within the first session.  90% experience a major change in the first two weeks. Lasting change ordinarily takes a number of months.

Q: What is a healing crisis?

A: A healing crisis is a normal and naturally occurring detoxification event.  It is experienced by approximately 5% of people who practice the Buteyko Method.  When people normalize their breathing, their metabolism becomes much stronger.  As a result, the body starts to flush out toxins, which may have accumulated over many years.  While in some, this process may go unnoticed, in others, symptoms of illness may become acute, temporarily worsening, or a person may experience discomfort.  The healing crisis is discussed in detail during Buteyko Method and Lifestyle Course.

Q: Can the Buteyko Method be taught to children?

A: Yes, most children can learn the Buteyko Method.  In fact, by incorporating stories, games and other teaching techniques, we find that most children learn and apply the method much faster than adults.  Furthermore, the Buteyko Method not only improves a child’s health, but also his/her temperament, and ability to concentrate and complete intellectual tasks.  For young/very young children, parents must learn the Method as well, in order to be their child’s tutor.

Q: Is the Buteyko Method useful for couples who are planning to have a child/children?

A: For women and men thinking about becoming parents: we strongly recommend learning the Buteyko Method, to ensure the physical and mental health of your future child.  It is much easier to give birth to a healthy child and maintain their health later, as compared to a child who is born unhealthy.  Decades of experience by Buteyko practitioners show that parents who hyperventilate give birth to children who hyperventilate as well.  Be proactive, learn the Buteyko Method.  Remember: prevention is better than cure!

Q: Can the Buteyko Method be used during pregnancy?

A: It is usually not recommended to start a new exercise program during pregnancy.  However, we strongly recommend woman who are planning on being a mother to learn the Buteyko Method.  In many cases, it will ensure an easy and problem-free pregnancy.  Pregnant woman practicing the Buteyko Method normally do not experience morning sickness, fatigue, and their deliveries are less painful or even painless.

Q: Is the Buteyko Method helpful for those who are terminally ill?

A: Yes. In many cases, the Buteyko Method changes the condition of a person; however, there is no guarantee.  The Buteyko Method will definitely help to reduce pain, and overcome depression and anxiety.  The Buteyko Method also often helps those who are terminally ill to leave this world peacefully.

Q: Is there any age limit for learning the Buteyko Method?

A: No, there are no age limits for learning the Buteyko Method.  No one is too old to learn and successfully implement the Buteyko Method in their lives.

Q: I have had asthma for 40 years.  I am on inhaled steroids and rescue inhalers.  Can the Buteyko Method help me?

A: Yes.  Many of our students have had asthma since childhood.  According to K. P. Buteyko, the root cause of asthma is hyperventilation.  Once a student has eliminated his hyperventilation with the Buteyko Method – no matter how long he has had asthma – he will lose most or all of his symptoms.  Many students become completely drug-free.

Q: I have coughing fits, wheezing, suffocation attacks, excessive mucus, etc.  Will the Buteyko Method help with these symptoms?

A: Yes.  K. P. Buteyko discovered that chronic hyperventilation can be very dangerous or even lethal.  In order to protect itself, the body creates various defense mechanisms to reduce hyperventilation.  Coughing, wheezing, suffocation attacks, excessive mucus, and stuffy nose are just a few of these mechanisms.  The purpose of each of these ‘symptoms’ is to reduce hyperventilation, thereby protecting the body from even greater harm.  When a person reduces their hyperventilation voluntarily, these symptoms are no longer needed.  Many people greatly reduce them within the first few weeks of beginning the Buteyko Breathing Exercises.  Ultimately, most people lose their symptoms completely.

Q: How can I check to see if I hyperventilate?

A: The best way to check to see if you hyperventilate is to take our Online Self-Test.  Your self-test results will be submitted to a Certified Buteyko Method Specialist for review, and you will receive a Buteyko Health Evaluation Report based on your results.

Q: People with breathing difficulties are often told to take a deep breath.  Is this wrong?

A: Yes.  While the concept of deep breathing, or ‘just take a deep breath,’ has become a part of our popular culture, deep breathing is very harmful for people with breathing difficulties.  K. P. Buteyko pointed out (based on the Bohr Effect) that oxygenation of the vital organs reduces as breathing increases.  In fact, deep breathing can easily provoke an asthma attack.

Q: Will I suffocate if I breathe less?

A: No.  For most students who are new to the Buteyko Method, the concept of breathing reduction may seem counter-intuitive.  Many have spent their lives fighting to breathe enough air.  However, breathing less triggers a relaxation and dilation of the smooth muscles along the bronchial tubes, which gives an asthmatic relief from their symptoms.

Q: I've read about the Buteyko Method.  Is it a good idea to start experimenting with breathing reduction on my own?

A: No.  Attempting this kind of breathing retraining on your own could be hazardous to your health, or you just won’t achieve the results you would like.  You should seek out expert supervision, and find a Certified Buteyko Practitioner to work with.  K. P. Buteyko always insisted that his method was best learned under the supervision of a competent practitioner.

Q: I have asthma.  What is the best way for me to begin learning the Buteyko Method?

A: The best way to begin learning the Buteyko Method is to do an Initial Assessment with Thomas Yakovlev-Fredricksen.  Thomas is the co-founder of Buteyko Center USA, an Advanced Buteyko Method Specialist, and our Director of Education.  During the Initial Assessment, Thomas will learn your health history and respond to any questions you may have about the Buteyko Method or our educational programs.  Together, you and Thomas can decide which of our educational programs best suits your needs.

Q: Which of your programs is best for asthmatics?

A: The best program for asthmatics is our main educational course, Buteyko Method and Lifestyle.  This is an opportunity for you to learn the Buteyko Method one-on-one with a Certified Buteyko Method Specialist.  The course will be tailored to your individual needs and your progress carefully monitored by your practitioner.

Q: Where can I find more information about your programs?

A: If you have further questions about our programs, they may be answered on our Frequently Asked Questions Page.  Or, you might find the information you are looking for on our Learn Page.  Still need more info?  Call our Center anytime (845) 684-5456, or you may email us at buteykocenter@gmail.com.

Q: How are you going to treat my asthma?

A: We are not medical doctors and we do not treat any particular disease.  We educate people on the Buteyko Method and teach them how to eliminate their hyperventilation.  Ordinarily, breathing normalization leads to significant improvement in many bodily systems and overall functioning.  As a result, a person becomes much healthier and commonly loses their primary symptoms.

Q: Will you advise me on when to stop taking my medicine?

A: We are not medical doctors and we do not give advice regarding medication.  We help our students to normalize their breathing, and as a result, they often lose most or all their primary symptoms.  Decisions about medication and dosing are between student and their physician.  However, often when symptoms are reduced, and standard medical diagnostics deems the asthmatic condition improving, physicians will often recommend a reduction in medication.

Q: I am planning on having a baby.  My first child is asthmatic, and I don’t want the next one to suffer from breathing difficulties.  Can the Buteyko Method help me?

A: We strongly recommend all women who are planning on becoming pregnant to take our Buteyko Method and Lifestyle course.  It is much easer to give birth to a healthy baby than it is to improve the health of a baby who is born unhealthy. Applying the Buteyko Method before pregnancy will ensure that your child will not be born as a hyperventilator.  According to Dr. Buteyko, if a child is born with good breathing, then they are in perfect health.

Q: I have a newborn baby with breathing difficulties.  Can the Buteyko Method help my child?

A: Yes.  Children of any age can learn the Buteyko Method.  In the case of young children and newborns, a Buteyko Practitioner will teach you the Method, and you can teach your child as they develop.

Q: My daughter has asthma.  I am worried about the long-term effects of medication and about her suffering from asthma her whole life.  Can the Buteyko Method help her?

A: Yes.  Definitely.  The Buteyko Method can be successfully taught to children of all ages.  In fact, children often understand the method much more quickly than adults, and can shift their breathing and asthma symptoms more easily than adults.  However, in most cases, a parent or guardian must learn the method alongside their child, in order to support and mentor their child outside of the formal sessions.

Q: My son has asthma.  My other son has allergies and my husband snores.  I think we could all benefit from learning the Buteyko Method.  Can families attend your individual educational courses together?

A: Yes.  For example, all immediate family members may be present for the Buteyko Method and Lifestyle course sessions.  While attention will be paid primarily to the asthmatic student (child) for whom the family enrolled, all family members will have the opportunity to learn the Buteyko Method.  We highly encourage families to take educational courses together, as this creates the best environment for the primary student (child), and all other family members, to benefit from the Method.

Q: I have a lot of questions about the Buteyko Method, but I want to speak to a real person.  How can I do this?

A: We encourage any and all questions you have about the Buteyko Method and our educational programs.  The best forum for your questions is our Initial Assessment.  This is a 45-minute preliminary consultation by telephone, Skype or in person, during which you can discuss your health situation in detail with a Certified Buteyko Method Specialist.  To schedule an Initial Assessment, call our Center anytime at (845) 684-5456, or email us at buteykocenter@gmail.com.

Q: Can you give me any advice right now?

A: Yes.  Always breathe gently through your nose only.  This will greatly reduce hyperventilation, which, as K. P. Buteyko discovered, is the root cause of asthma.

Q: I wake up each morning with a stuffy nose; will this method help me?

A: Yes! By making your nose stuffy, your organism protects itself from over-breathing: it simply narrows air channels. We will teach you how to reduce your breathing and that will eliminate the cause of your problem. Aside from that, you will learn a special technique, which Dr. Buteyko developed for clearing nasal passages. You can use it any time you feel a need to unblock your nose. It is a gentle technique and, unlike many others, does not cause additional hyperventilation and mucus creation.

Q: Breathing difficulties: can the Buteyko Method help?

A: Absolutely!  Dr. Konstantin Buteyko’s discovery and cure both revolve around balancing the body’s use of oxygen and carbon dioxide.  It is the imbalance of these two elements that causes the reactions of the body, which, in turn, create the majority of breathing difficulties we experience.  By applying the Buteyko Method properly, the system balance is restored and breathing difficulties defeated.  There is more information on this subject in the book Asthma Cure Manual, by Dr. A. Novozhilov.  This book is written for people with asthma and other breathing difficulties.  The book is available in our store to download and in paper format.

Q: I am interested in learning the Buteyko Method for my health issues.  What educational options do you offer?

A: Buteyko Center USA offers a wide variety of education offerings for individuals seeking to learn the patented Buteyko Method.  We offer individualized educational programs which feature one-on-one instruction with a Certified Buteyko Practitioner.  We also offer group workshops.  And for self-directed learners, we offer a Home Study Program, which includes many educational materials and specific Buteyko tools.  Learn more about our education options here.

Q: How do I find a practitioner?

A: You are always welcome to call or email us and we will advise the best practitioner for you to work with. You can also look at the Official Listing of Certified Practitioners on our website, which contains current information about all Certified Buteyko Practitioners worldwide (except Russia).

Q: Someone in my area is offering ‘Buteyko’ courses, but they are not on your Official Listing.  Is it okay to take courses with them?

A: Please be advised that taking a Buteyko Method educational course with a person who is not on our listing may be hazardous to your breathing and health.  We recommend learning the Buteyko Method only from a Buteyko Specialist certified by the patent holders of the Buteyko Method (see Official Listing of Certified Practitioners).

Q: What is the best educational program you offer for someone who wants to work one-on-one with a Certified Buteyko Method Practitioner?

A: The best way to learn the Buteyko Method is to enroll in our main educational course, Buteyko Method and Lifestyle.  In this case, a student works one-on-one with a Buteyko Method Specialist, either in person or via Skype (a free internet video-phone). During the course, the Specialist determines individual causes of hyperventilation, and creates a plan for altering the student’s lifestyle – in order to improve their breathing and health.  The Buteyko Practitioner also teaches the student the Buteyko breathing exercises, which are part of the foundation of the Method.  This course is the best way for you to learn the many aspects of the Buteyko Method – which will improve your breathing and restore your health.

Q: What is the Preliminary Consultation?

A: If you are considering Buteyko Method and Lifestyle course, the first step is to register for an Preliminary Consultation. The purpose of this assessment is to help the student (and members of their family) evaluate the potential affect of the Buteyko Method on their life.

Most Preliminary Consultations are done by Thomas Yakovlev-Fredricksen, Director of Education at Buteyko Center USA. During the assessment, Thomas will learn about your health history, briefly explain the theory of the Buteyko Method, answer your questions, and determine the most appropriate Buteyko Specialist for you to work with. Thomas is uniquely qualified to discuss the benefits of the Buteyko Method – because the Buteyko Method saved his life.

Q: If I am interested in learning the Buteyko Method in a group setting, what is the best way?

A: For individuals learning the Buteyko Method in a group setting, we offer the ‘Natural Breathing Cure Weekend Workshop.’  Led by Sasha and Thomas Yakovlev-Fredricksen, the foremost practitioners of the Buteyko Method in the United States, this workshop is an excellent opportunity to get an introduction to the Buteyko Method in a supportive group setting. Learn more about the Natural Breathing Cure Weekend Workshop here

Q: I am interested in learning the Buteyko Method on my own, what is the best way?

A: The best way to learn the Buteyko Method on your own is with our Home Study Program.  This program, specially designed for self-directed learners contains our CD set, book, and various tools for breathing exercises, including written explanations, and a one-hour consultation with a Specialist.  You can find more info on our Home Study Program here.

Q: What books do you recommend on the Buteyko Method?

A: The only English language book we recommend on the patented Buteyko Method is the Asthma Cure Manual.  This book is an excellent introduction to the Buteyko Method.  It is intended for medical professionals as well as people who suffer from breathing difficulties, including all forms of asthma and COPD.  Yet it is useful for anyone who wants to know more about the Buteyko Method, directly from the source.  The book describes breathing exercises, is full of useful suggestions, including techniques on how to prevent hyperventilation during sleep, or how to accurately gauge your Control Pause.  In addition, there is a comprehensive guide to steroid therapy, and how to practice it in combination with Buteyko breathing.  The techniques described in the book are for both children and adults.  The author, Dr. Andrey Novozhilov, is the Medical Director of Clinica Buteyko (Moscow) and one of the patent-holders of the Buteyko Method.  He has practiced the Buteyko Method for over forty years.  Foreword by Thomas Yakovlev-Fredricksen.

Q: What audio course/CDs do you recommend on the Buteyko Method?

A: The only audio course/CD series we presently recommend on the patented Buteyko Method is the Buteyko Method Audio Course produced by Buteyko Center USA.  It contains information about K. Buteyko, the discovery and theory of his method, as well as specific directions on how to evaluate your health.  Most importantly, there are detailed explanations and instructions on several breathing exercises.  This training course is an excellent introduction to the Buteyko Method.  It is based on lectures of K. Buteyko as well as instructions given to Thomas and Sasha Yakovlev-Fredricksen by L. Buteyko and A. Novozhilov during their two internships at Clinica Buteyko in Moscow.

Q: What DVD do you recommend on the Buteyko Method?

A: At this time, there is no educational DVD that we recommend.  However, we are producing a DVD that will be available early next year.

Q: Do you offer training for athletes, or people who exercise regularly, or people who would like to exercise regularly?

A: Yes, we offer training for athletes, people who exercise regularly, and people who would like to exercise regularly.  Our education course, Buteyko in Motion teaches proper breathing during various physical activities, from walking to running, weight training and yoga. Learn more about Buteyko in Motion here.

Q:  Why should a parent participate with a child?

A: A parent should participate with a child in an education program because we find that the success of a child depends largely on the support and encouragement of parents and family members.  Also, depending on the child’s age, the parent may have to actively mentor the child and structure their Buteyko Method breathings sessions.

Q: Are your educational courses available only at Buteyko Center USA in Woodstock, NY?

A: No, you can take our educational courses in our office in Woodstock, NY, as well as online (via Skype).  We can also recommend practitioners in other states and countries.

Q: What equipment do I need to take a course online?

A: All that is required for Buteyko Center USA online educational courses is a computer with an internet connection, web camera, and a software program called ‘Skype.’

Q: What is Skype?

A: Many of our educational courses are available as online courses, utilizing ‘Skype’ software.  Skype is a free internet video-phone that simply requires a computer, internet connection and web camera to create a live video link between a student and Buteyko Practitioner.  This allows students and practitioners at great distance work together effectively.

Q: Do you offer webinars?

A: Yes, we offer free informational webinars 1-2 times per month.  These introductory webinars are a presentation of the Buteyko Method by Thomas and Sasha Yakovlev-Fredricksen, Co-Founders of Buteyko Center USA, as well as a question and answer period.  All are welcome to attend.  We also offer subject-specific lectures on various Buteyko Method topics.  Again, all are welcomed to attend.  All that is required is a computer and internet connection.

Q: I want to learn the Buteyko Method. What is the best way to begin?

A: We invite anyone who is interested in learning the Buteyko Method to register for an Initial Assessment.  After this preliminary consultation with our Director of Education, if you are qualified, you will be invited to enroll in our main educational course, Buteyko Method and Lifestyle.

Q: What kind of professional training do you offer?

A: Buteyko Center USA, the exclusive representative of the patent holders of the Buteyko Method (outside of Russia), offers Buteyko Method Mentor, Specialist and Advanced Specialist professional training programs.  These levels of training are sequential, and each one must be completed before pursuing the next level of training.  In order to teach the Buteyko Method commercially, one needs to achieve the level of Buteyko Method Specialist or Advanced Specialist.

Q: What is required to become a Buteyko Method Mentor?

A: Buteyko Method Mentor status is awarded to individuals who complete and achieve proficiency in our main educational course, Buteyko Method and Lifestyle.  This is our foundational educational course and needs to be completed for educational and personal health improvement purposes.  Moreover, future practitioners will be using this educational course as the basis of their future work with students, and therefore need to experience it first-hand as a student.

Q: Are there any prerequisites for beginning the Buteyko Method Mentor training?

A: No, there are no prerequisites for enrolling in the Buteyko Method Mentor training program.

Q: How often does the Buteyko Method Mentor training take place?

Q: What are the rights and privileges of Buteyko Method Mentor status?

A: The Buteyko Method Mentor Diploma indicates that a student has a basic education in the patented Buteyko Method.  They do not have the rights to teach the Buteyko Method commercially, but they are encouraged to share the theory of the Buteyko Method with persons in need on a pro bono basis.

Q: What is required to become a Buteyko Method Specialist?

Q: What is the difference between the name Clinica Buteyko and Buteyko Clinic?

A: Clinica Buteyko was formed in Moscow in 1988 by K.P. Buteyko, MD, along with his closest colleagues - his wife, Ludmila Buteyko and her son Andrey Novozhilov, MD.  The name ‘Clinica Buteyko’ is the direct translation from Russian; however, when the Buteyko Method began being mentioned on western Internet sites, its name was translated to ‘Buteyko Clinic.’  At that time, the phrase ‘Buteyko Clinic’ was not legally registered in English.  Some individuals took advantage of this situation and began using the name of the famous Buteyko Clinic for their own business (to know more read Open Letter by L.Buteyko).  In the past several years, Clinica Buteyko has sent numerous official letters, addressed to Patrick McKeown (the head of this group) to cease the misusage of the legendary name of K.P. Buteyko’s Clinic.  Unfortunately, the requests were all ignored and the name ‘Buteyko Clinic’ remains in use.

PLEASE BE ADVISED: Any organization which calls itself ‘Buteyko Clinic’ does not have any connection with Clinica Buteyko, and does not have the right to teach the patented Buteyko Method or to use the ‘Buteyko’ trademark.  In 2010, in an effort to distinguish themselves from these so-called ‘Buteyko Clinics,’ the patent holders of the Buteyko Method made a decision to use the name ‘Clinica Buteyko’ only, for the authentic Buteyko Clinic in Moscow.

Q: I have been searching the Internet, and found that there are many websites with 'Lists of Buteyko Practitioners.'

A: Currently, there are many websites that claim to represent the Buteyko Method.  Many of these websites have 'Lists of Practitioners.'  However, none of the people listed on the sites have legitimate diplomas, unless they are listed on the Official Listing of Buteyko Practitioners on the Buteyko Center USA website.

Q: Why is your Listing the Official Listing?

A: The Buteyko Method is a patented Method.  The patent holders are Ludmila Buteyko and Andrey Novozhilov, M.D.  They have given Buteyko Center USA exclusive rights to represent them in the United States, and all countries outside of Russia.  We are the only official recognized 'Buteyko' organization outside of Russia, and we are the headquarters for all official Buteyko centers and Buteyko practitioners.  Therefore, we provide the Official Listing of Certified Practitioners.

Q: If I hear about or speak to a person who says they are a Buteyko Practitioner, how do I know that they are legitimate?

A: In order to teach the Buteyko Method, a person MUST have a LEGITIMATE DIPLOMA and a current WORK CERTIFICATE.  There are three ways to check the legitimacy of a person's claim to be a Certified Buteyko Method Practitioner.

1)  Simply check to see if they are on our Official Listing of Certified Practitioners.

2)  Or, engage them in the following discussion:

a.  Do you have a legitimate Diploma (as a Buteyko Method Specialist or Advanced Specialist) from either the patent holders of the Buteyko Method or Buteyko Center USA?  May I see it?

b.  Are you currently certified to teach?  May I see your Work Certificate?

3) Call or email Buteyko Center USA for inquiries about legitimate practitioners, (845) 684-5456 or buteykocenter@gmail.com

Q: This is confusing, and it is difficult for me to evaluate the legitimacy of various practitioners and organizations.  Can you clarify this situation for me?

A: It is true that there are many organizations claiming to teach and represent the Buteyko Method.  In most cases, these organizations trace their origins back to a single individual who claims to have authentic training in the Buteyko Method.  Then these individuals created organizations and worked with students and trained other 'practitioners.'  Unfortunately, in most cases these 'original individuals' were never appropriately trained and certified.  Or, they did not have the rights to train other practitioners.  Now, there are many people who market themselves as 'Buteyko Practitioners,' who have dubious, or at least uncertain training and credentials.  It is an unfortunate and confusing situation for a person who is simply trying to seek out a knowledgeable and competent Buteyko Method Practitioner.

For a more detailed explanation of this situation directly from the patent holders, please read Ludmila Buteyko's Open Letter to Western Buteyko Practitioners.

Buteyko Center USA is responsible for maintaining the integrity of the Buteyko Method (outside or Russia) and is therefore actively pursuing cases of patent and trademark infringement.  However, our efforts to maintain quality control rely on slow-moving legal processes.  Please be assured that we are moving as quickly as possible to remedy this situation.
